Guanajuato History
Long before the ambitious Spanish conquest of the Americas commenced, the mountainous terrain of Guanajuato was home to indigenous civilizations such as the widespread Aztec empire and smaller local civilizations like the P'urhépechas, who are credited with the naming of Guanajuato.
When silver prospectors dreamed of what might lay within Guanajuato's rugged landscape, they struck gold- well, silver really - and became the wealthy silver capital of Mexico. It went on to play - as it still does - an influential part in Mexico's economy, politics, culture and history. In fact, Mexico's quest for independence from the Spanish began right here in Guanajuato!
