Diego Rivera
Famous for his vibrant, large-scale murals throughout the Americas as well as for his rocky marriage to fellow artist Frida Kahlo, world-famous muralist Diego Rivera was born right here in Guanajuato!
Born into a Criollo family, Rivera easily identified with and depicted in his artwork the social struggles of the Mexican people. He was able to convey moral messages and tell entire stories through his bold and colorful depictions of people, significant events and symbolic scenes painted on large public wall spaces.
After spending a fair share of time in Europe, Rivera returned to Mexico and made a name for himself in the New Mexican Mural Movement alongside artists like José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Ironically, while Guanajuato very much celebrates Diego Rivera's life and works nowadays, the artist was banned from the relatively conservative city for a hefty chunk of his life due to his Marxist beliefs.
